Day 04 - My favorite horror movie
The OthersDirected by Alejandro Amenabar
This movie is technically a thriller/mystery/drama, but I don’t really have the taste for horror movies. The Others is very intriguing to me, however, because of the pure psychological aspect of what the film convinces the audience. I won’t give too much away, but it is certainly one of Nicole Kidman’s best performances. To me, movies that keep the audience on the edge of their seat or covering their eyes in suspense with a minimalistic setting are very impressive. The audience becomes as paranoid as the characters without being in the actual house with them because of the anticipation of figuring out the twist or plot. I would always rather watch this kind of movie than the kind that produces the same response but doing so with blood and gore in the mix.

YES! I love this movie!  When I saw it in theaters years ago it scared the crap out of me, and I’ve always wondered why more people haven’t seen it.  Have you ever read The Turn of the Screw ?  It’s a psychological ghost story written by Henry James in 1898 (I had to read it in high school), and I’ve always thought that this movie was inspired by it. They have slightly similar plots, and both use ambiguity and a sense of foreboding calmness to build suspense and fear.  Films like this remain scary and entertaining even when you go back to watch them again, because they have an interesting plot instead of just relying on in your face scary monsters or gore.  Good pick Chels.
